Chasing The Cup

The Washington Capitals push for the Stanley Cup

The Washington Capitals came out of the gate on fire and have kept up their torrid pace. They were able to clinch the number one seed in the Stanley Cup playoffs with 10 games left in the season. Creating expectations from fans that are higher than ever this year.

“I expect the Caps to win the Stanley Cup this year considering everything they have accomplished this season,” said junior Connor Dwyer.

Many fans have some reservations regarding the Caps in the playoffs. Historically the Capitals have been excellent in the regular season, but flop when the playoffs come around.

“I am definitely nervous about the playoffs, considering what they have done in the past, but I think they have a really good chance of getting it done [winning the Stanley Cup],” said junior Emily Altman.

Fans may have their differences about who they love to watch and root for, but one thing remains the same their love for playoff hockey.

“The intensity [is my favorite part of playoff hockey] it’s hard to explain, but the players seem to be skating faster and checking harder,” said freshman Tommy Hjort.

Nothing can describe the change in atmosphere around NHL arenas when April comes around. Everything gets louder and the stakes are a lot higher than that of a regular season game. The Capitals have a strong fan base and it shows.

“I have been watching the Caps for about 10 years now my dad loves to watch every game, so he got me into it,” said sophomore Morgan Kasmer.

The Capitals have one the largest fan bases in the NHL. It’s definitely a testament to the passion of Washington sports fans.

If the Caps were poised to make a run, this could be their golden opportunity.

“The players we picked up in the offseason [make us a lot better]. I think our General Manager did a great job,” said Altman.

Depth on a roster through the playoffs is a big issue for most teams as players get injured and new guys have to be thrust into the lineup.

“We have two really good goalies, and our defense is pretty deep this year,” said Kasmer.

While the Capitals have been the NHL’s best team all year, there is no doubt that there will be challenges down the stretch.

“[One team I wouldn’t want to play] would be the Flyers, because they’re so chippy, and if we were to win that series there’s a good chance someone could get hurt,” said Hjort.

Opposing teams are not the only challenges facing the Caps, many fans think the hardest part may be getting over the past.

“Getting passed their past playoff failures, and focusing on this year [will be their biggest challenge],” said Kasmer.
