Linking Up with Link Crew

Bringing in new kids with a new program

With this being the first year of link crew at Potomac Fall High School, the bar is set high. They must workout what plans they are going to do with their leaders/captains this year, plans over the summer, as well as the abundance of activities they would like to incorporate into next year’s schedule.

“[Link Crew is] a new program for freshmen to get more accumulated to the school and just feel more comfortable in their new environment,” said sophomore Sarah Holz, a captain in Link Crew.

Though some may not know, the current link crew leaders and captains had to go through a rigorous selection process to get the position: Filling out a large application, writing a one page essay, and getting two teacher recommendations.

“I was shocked [about getting into Link Crew] and wondered if everyone got in. I told my parents and everyone around me,” said sophomore Carrie Bates, a Link Crew leader.

Now that they have finally gotten everyone’s application, and carefully chosen who would be able to represent Link Crew, they begin to work in their first meeting, called May Development Day.

“After we played a bonding type tag game, we sat down and ate a brownie with our group and played mind games. At the end, we drew t-shirt ideas for Link Crew and wrote down things we can help freshman with next year,” said Bates.

The planning doesn’t stop just when the school year does; the captains of Link Crew have also made plans to get together this summer for a summer picnic, where they will get to know the leaders, become comfortable with one another, and then talk about freshmen orientation coming up in August.

“[I’m excited for the] lots of fun meetings and outings for Link Crew members so we can stay close over the summer,” said Bates.

Overall you can tell the Link Crew captains and leaders are very excited to start the year off with the upcoming freshmen, and have big ideas coming to make their first high school experience the best it can be.

“I’m most excited about what it’s going to offer for Potomac Falls. I think it’s gonna be a big culture shift and change the dynamics of the freshmen year experience,” said Spencer Swinimer.
