Winter Sports Preview: Girls’ Swimming

A behind-the-scenes look at this year’s team

As the winter sports season begins, participants are preparing for the grueling times ahead. Whether it’s setting personal goals or planning for the practices, the members of the girls’ swim team are no exception. Many already have an idea of what they’d like to accomplish.

“I hope that I can get the state championship in the 100 back again and get [the] best time,” said sophomore swimmer Charlotte Fieeiki.

Fieeiki earned the state title for 100 meter backstroke last year. This year, to try and top her previous score, Fieeiki’s plan is to, “definitely get faster times, I know I could’ve done a lot better [last season].”

Freshman Chale Jacks’ goal is to make it to states this year. She’s been swimming for seven years and hopes to make it to the National Collegiate Scouting Association (NCSA’s).

Along with the exciting meets, another thing participants look forward to are the dual meets and pasta parties.

“[Dual meets are] when two high school teams go against each other,” said Fieeiki.

They’re different from normal meets, which are when a team competes against many schools.

Pasta parties, dinners where the whole team gets together the night before a meet to eat pasta, are one of Fieeiki’s favorite parts of the season.

Participants are already practicing for their first meet against Broad Run on Dec. 3. They train at the Claude Moore Recreation Center for an hour and a half after school and do many different drills. For example, the team does dives and sprints the day before a meet.

In addition to all these exciting parts of the season, Jacks is also enthusiastic about the experience of being a part of the team.

“[I’m looking forward to] meeting new people and seeing how it goes.”
