Gilmore works on homecoming court plans during SCA. She is excited to be SCA’s vice president.

Dede Gilmore is the current vice president for the SCA. Her job is organizing varsity spirit for pep rallies and other events. So far, she’s really looking forward to all the events coming up that SCA has planned like homecoming and pep rallies.

“I think that the pep rallies to come are going to be really cool; you can’t even imagine what we have planned,” said Gilmore.

Her fall assignment is working on homecoming court. For that, she’s coming up with creative ideas for how everyone is going to vote and what they’re going to do for the reveal.

Q and A:

Q. What convinced you to run for vice president?

          A. “Well, I knew I was going to run for SCA, [but] I wasn’t really sure what position I was going to run for until it got closer to the actual elections. Based off the people that were running, I felt like it was a really good group. They already had most of their positions picked out and Ms. S. [Swinimer] also told me that I would probably be a good leader because I’m one of the few seniors that were running. She thought that me and Makenzie [Dorsey, SCA President] knew each other pretty well and [that] it would be a lot better if I was a higher position like vice president.”

Q.What kind of responsibilities do you have? What makes your position unique?

          A. “So we all have our different things that we have. I’m in charge of varsity spirit and pep for a lot of pep rallies and stuff. I help organize that and I try and help come up with games and there’s usually a group of us that do that. My fall assignment is homecoming court. I’ll be figuring out not just how we’re going to vote, but how we’re going to do the reveal because people don’t really recognize that a lot of work does go into that. And it is something that if it doesn’t happen, people recognize it. But, if it does happen and it’s amazing, people don’t really see that kind of background to it, or the behind the scenes. So it’s kinda [sic] one of those stressful jobs where you[‘ve] got to make it really good or else people will recognize it. But if you do make it really good, people aren’t going to be like wow that was really good because they won’t remember.”

Q.Do you have any plans for the reveal yet?

          A. “I just have a few ideas right now, but because it’s a Dr. Seuss themed homecoming we’re probably going to do something [where] the girls will all have hats and then there’s different colored confetti in one of the hats, and they’ll have to put on the hats. But someone said that they didn’t want to have confetti in their hair, so I might have to rethink that one a bit.”

Q.What made you guys choose the theme of Dr. Seuss for homecoming?

A.“We brainstormed and we had a bunch of themes. Then, when we got Dr. Seuss into our top three at the end of the day, Ms. S. was telling us [that] we always have Dr. Seuss in the final three but we never do it because people think it’s too kiddish [sic]. [So] we got into a discussion [about how] we just did Disney Pixar movies, like that’s pretty kiddish [sic] too. And we were like ‘I love Dr. Seuss this could be so fun’, and then we started talking about the different types of decorations we could get, and how the spirit days would be really fun. And we all came into an agreement almost immediately that that was what we wanted.”

Q.What’s the usual stuff you guys do in class?

A. “There’s nothing usual about this class. It’s like a different thing every time. Last class, I just cleaned up the entire block. But then the class before that, we were planning the pep rally so we were all like, yelling and screaming at each other, like ‘this is what needs to happen and you have to get this done’. And then, the class before that, was again planning pep rallies.”

Q. What event are you most excited about this year?

          A. “I don’t know, I honestly think the pep rallies, if you could tell from our first pep rally, we’re kinda [sic] doing them differently this year. They’re a lot more creatively done, they’re not following any layout that we had before. I think that the pep rallies to come are going to be really cool, like you can’t even imagine what we have planned.”

Q. What are your plans after high school?

          A. “Definitely college. I don’t know where, [but I’m] probably going to run wherever I go. I haven’t made any decision.”

Q. What’s your favorite part about SCA?

          A. “I mean, the year just started, so I don’t really have a number one favorite. [But,] the thing I’m happiest about SCA is the balance of people because we’re all really close friends with each other and it works.”

Q. What are your goals for this year, in general?

          A. “That was on our application for SCA, ‘what was our biggest goal for the upcoming year’. Mine was definitely more awareness about the school. Not of one specific thing, just general awareness. People don’t really know what’s going on in the school, so teaming up with PF Announcements helps a lot and [so does] putting more stuff on Feature Friday. Link Crew helped so much because we were able to get freshman right out of the gate and they understood a lot of the traditions at the school and they were in sports and stuff. And just the little things that goes on I want to put a bigger spotlight on them.”

Q. What’s your biggest fear this school year?

A. “Probably the pep rally, when the microphone just goes out. That’s something we didn’t anticipate and it just didn’t work and we were all just kinda [sic] standing there and we didn’t know what to do. Like, what do you do [when] you have the entire student body in the gym and they’re all looking at you and the microphone is not working? And you don’t know what to do, so you go to put on music, and then the sound system isn’t working, so you’re like ‘uhhhhh…’ That was probably it.”

Q. Is there anything else you’d like to say or add in?

  A. “Ms. S. is the greatest human on this earth.”
