The National Championship is one of the most watched televised events in the United States. In 2014 the National Championship became an even larger event when the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) decided to start a four team college football playoff. This year, there has been a heated discussion whether the committee has chose the best four teams in the NCAA. The committee chose: Alabama, Ohio State, Clemson, and Washington as the top teams even though number five Penn State won the Big 10 Championship and beat number two Ohio State.

“I think Penn State should’ve been in the top four over Ohio State. Penn State beat them in a great game and won the Big Ten Championship in a dominant performance in the second half of the Big Ten Championship”, said junior Drew Weidman.

Penn State has excelled since their loss against Michigan. The team has beaten ranked opponents: Wisconsin and Ohio State in a flashy game.

“They got [the rankings] right. Penn State was overrated and got dominated by Michigan. They won the Ohio State game in a lucky way,” said senior Trey St. Francis.

The other controversy surrounding the College Football Rankings is that they are not giving a champion, Penn State, a chance to prove themselves and have a chance at the National Championship. Washington jumped to the number four spot and remained at number four because they were the Pac-12 champions. This decision created even more controversy about the rankings. Many sports fans believe that the committee was contradicting themselves by not respecting all conference champions, and leaving Penn State out.

“Although I think they should respect the champions, Penn State didn’t prove this year that they were a dominant team,” said St. Francis.

Former Briar Woods quarterback, Trace McSorley, has lead Penn State to a phenomenal season and is currently ranked number five on next year’s Heisman watch. McSorley lead his team back from a 14 point deficit in the Big 10 Championship and exploded throwing for 384 yards and 4 touchdowns.

Many people feel there is a solution to the controversy in having a committee select the top four teams: expand the College Football Playoffs to eight teams.

“An eight team playoff would be much better.  [There would be] more teams and more football to watch,” said St. Francis.

As the discussion, continues about whether the committee made the right decision there is nothing people can do besides wait to see who will take home the National Championship.
