With eight returning starters, the Boys’ Varsity Lacrosse team is poised to have a solid season this year. The departure of First Team All-Region defenseman Nick Farmer is sure to be noticed, but with two returning Second Team All-Conference defenders in Colin Birch and Arthur Harris and senior Matt Carter stepping up, the defense is sure to be just as solid as last year.

“I think our defense is our greatest strength,” said senior goalie Nick Pasco.

Pasco’s play has helped the team throughout his four years, having started since the end of his freshman year.

Another focal point of this year’s team are seniors Matt Macioce (Mass-e-o-c) and Ryan Schulien (Shoe-lee-n). Macioce is captain of the midfield, while Schulien is captain of the attack.

Schulien wears No. 22 this year, a sacred number on the team that is handed down by the previous owner, passing with it pride and honor. Last year, it was worn by Nick Farmer, whose presence will be felt for many years to come. Schulien understands that he needs to lead as a result.

“I can set an example on and off the field by not messing around during practice and working hard [for my teammates],” said Schulien.

The team has been looking forward to the season for a long time, having prepared all off-season for Mar. 14., their first game.

“During the offseason we did a lot of lifting and conditioning, as well as stick work, so we will be in a lot better shape this year,” said Birch.

Some key games include:

The team takes on Heritage at their first game on March 14 at 7:15 p.m. in Panther Stadium.

The Panthers take on Rock Ridge at home on March 23 at 7:15 p.m.

Rivalry game away against Tuscarora on April 4 at 7:15 p.m.
