Spring Sports Preview: Girls’ Varsity Lacrosse

A closer look at this years girls’ varsity lacrosse team

The girls varsity lacrosse team completed a powerful season last year by winning the state championship. The girls only lost last year came in a shootout (17-20) against Marshall High School. With 14 returning members from last year’s championship winning team, the girls are very eager, looking to be back-to-back champions.

The key component to winning a championship title is teamwork. If everyone does not work together and are not on the same page, victory would be out of reach.

“The word ‘team’ means a group of people who work together to achieve a common goal. They motivate and inspire one another without harming anyone,” said senior captain Molly Decarli.

A new season means new players, new teams, and new things to look forward to.

“I think this season could be just as good as last years, even though we set the bar so high. I’m looking forward to playing and making friends with the new people on the team. I’m going to enjoy playing one last year with my sister,” said Decarli.

For many of the seniors, their last season is full of potential and allows them an opportunity to pursue a sport they love.

“I enjoy playing lacrosse because it’s a time where I can compete and push myself to learn more about the game and to develop skills that make me better. Lacrosse is also a great stress reliever and allows me to turn my focus from things that may be bothering me and concentrate on getting better,” said senior captain Tori Birks.

While the varsity team has set high expectations for themselves, they are equipped to handle the pressure.

“Being on varsity is a lot of pressure because you’re supposed to be the best, and you’re representing your school,” said Birks.

For boths of these midfielders, this will be their final season and they hope to leave with nothing less but another championship.

The varsity team plays their first game March 14, at 6 p.m. at Heritage High School.

Key games: The girls take on our crosstown rivals, the Stone Bridge Bulldogs, on March 20 at 7:15 p.m. at home.
