Opinion: 11 Things I Learned in High School

1. Be inclusive and kind to everyone

This is probably one of the most important things to remember. It’s never right to judge someone based on first impressions. You never know what someone is going through, so it’s important to always be kind. You don’t necessarily have to be best friends with everyone, but spread positive vibes and never make anyone feel unwanted.

2. It’s never too late

If you slacked a quarter or even a year DON’T JUST GIVE UP. We all go through times where we get side tracked; whether that be because you were super busy with other things, you got caught up in your social life, or because you just didn’t feel motivated. Pick yourself back up and get your life together. Trust me it’s never “too late” when it comes to making a positive change in your life.

3. Be true to yourself

High school is a time where you should be discovering your interests and who you are. Never lose an opportunity to do something you enjoy just because you’re afraid what others will think. Your real friends will stick with you no matter what; so don’t worry about other people’s judgments. By doing something you like you’ll end up with good memories, possibly an idea of what you want to do in the future, and even new friends.

4. School dancing… LIKE A BOSS

If you know you’re going to the dance try and get your outfit at least a month in advance. You want to make sure you’re wearing something you’re comfortable in. DO NOT fall under the pressure of “needing” a date. Unless you actually enjoy spending time with your possible date then it’s okay, but don’t just go with someone because you don’t want to be single. Going with a group of friends is typically more fun and single people party harder anyways.

5. Not all friends are forever, but memories are.

This is an unfortunate but true statement. People change and so do friendships, this is just a part of life. All friendships teach you different things. Keep the good memories and the lessons a friendship taught you and move on.

6. Just keep swimming

Even though you may feel completely overwhelmed and down remember that the issue you’re facing will pass soon. We tend to magnify our issues especially when we continuously stress about something. When you’re struggling to get through something just zoom out and remember the larger picture and that the problem you’re facing is temporary. Focus on all the good things that you’re privileged to have and just keep swimming.

7. Listen to what your peers and teachers have to say

It’s surprising how much you can learn from just listening to others. We get so caught up in our phones or thoughts that we often zone out when another is speaking. We may not always agree with what the other person is saying, but it’s important to listen to other people’s perspectives and try and understand where they’re coming from. Hearing different point of views strengthens our general understanding of the world.

8. Your grades don’t define you

One sheet of set, standardized material does not measure your personal worth. This can be hard to remember especially in a competitive environment. A test does not show your knowledge. It simply shows if you can work the system. Everyone learns differently there’s no “one size fits all.”

9. Your dreams don’t work unless you do

Having a dream is easy literally everyone has one. However having the patience, persistence, and work ethic to make them come true is what really makes a difference. If you simply dream and never work, your chances of actually making that dream come true and slim to none. If you dare to dream then have the courage to make that dream a reality.

10. Speak out

Your opinions matter so never be afraid to speak your mind. If you see any form of injustice speak out against it. It’s so important to stand up for what’s right. Remember that just because the majority thinks something’s right doesn’t mean that it actually is.

11. The mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell
