What to Watch: T.V. Shows to Binge this Winter Break
With a full two week long winter break this year, students will have plenty of time for holiday celebrations, spending time with friends, family vacations, and some much needed rest. No matter what your plans are for break, cozying up with a blanket and binge watching a show is a great way to spend your downtime during this chilly season.
There are many streaming platforms that have shows to make your Winter feel a little bit warmer. Whether it’s old or new, this must-watch list has plenty of options to keep you busy during break.
Here are eight binge-worthy shows to watch this holiday season.
Gossip Girl (2007-2012) – HBO Max
This Upper East Side classic focuses on a group of teenagers and their elite families whose lives and scandals are ruthlessly revealed by the mystery blogger, Gossip Girl. It’s hard not to binge with its dramatic storyline, roller coaster romances, and scandalous characters with their piles of secrets will have you watching it late into the night. The series also has two holiday-themed episodes that will add some drama to your own holiday (S1 E11 and S2 E12).
Space Force (2020-2022) – Netflix
This workplace comedy centers on the group of people in charge of developing the United States Space Force. The cast features comedians like Steve Carrell and Lisa Kudrow. This show is a mix of comedy, drama, and adventure. This well written script and talented cast makes it a great show to binge.
Derry Girls (2018-2022) – Netflix
Another comedy on Netflix, Derry Girls, is a coming-of-age story that centers on a group of teens living in British occupied Northern Ireland in the 1990s. This show is laugh-out-out funny, with its dry humor and situational comedy. The protagonist and her friends go to an all-girls Catholic school with overbearing parents and a disinterested Nun Headmistress. Its short episodes bring a new conflict to the main characters every time, with character development and relationship growth throughout the entire series that will make you smile.
Dash and Lily (2020) – Netflix
This Christmas show was released on Netflix in 2020, and has become an annual holiday season rewatch for many. It’s the romantic story about two New York City teens who exchange notes, dares, and secrets in a red notebook without actually meeting each other. It’s a really sweet story filled with character development, comedy, love, and Christmas.
Wednesday (2022) – Netflix
Wednesday is an extremely popular show that was released in November of this year. This Addams Family spinoff follows Wednesday Addams as she is sent to a boarding school and accidentally becomes caught up in a series of murders. She is determined to find the killer all while unintentionally making friends and enemies, and learning more about herself and her family’s history.
Fleabag (2016-2019) – Prime Video
This British comedy-drama centers on the life of “Fleabag,” an independent and unfiltered woman coping with a recent personal tragedy as she faces life and love in London. It is named one of the greatest shows on television, and it has received a 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. This show is beautifully written, edited, and acted by its cast and creators. This emotional, yet funny show has been described as “brilliant” and a “masterpiece” by many. It only has two short seasons, making it an bingable show for break.
The Great (2020-present) – Hulu
This dark comedy starring Ella Fanning and Nicholas Hoult tells the satirical story of the rise of Catherine the Great in 18th century Russia. The show admits to not being completely historically accurate, but it embraces satire and comedy to make a storyline that is hard to look away from. A third season is on the way; in fact, lead actress Fanning confirmed that production of season three wrapped on Dec. 5.
Only Murders in the Building (2021-present) – Hulu
Only Murders in the Building is a take on the classic murder mystery drama. After a murder occurs in their exclusive Upper West Side apartment building, three strangers who are all obsessed with true crime use their knowledge of crime to find the killer before the killer finds them. This series stars Selina Gomez, Steve Martin, and Martin Short, and is renewed for a third season which will come out in 2023.
