Singer, songwriter, poet, and musician Lana Del Rey is known for her beautiful voice, lyrical songwriting, and eccentric yet tranquil manner, so it came to no surprise for many fans when she randomly announced the release of her ninth studio album along with its lead single in early Dec. 2022. When will this album come out? Who will be featured on it? Where can I pre-order? Read on to learn what one of the most influential artists of the decade is bringing to the musical world in 2023.

From Born to Die to Blue Banisters, Lana Del Rey has told a story through her music. Her lyrics and melodies explore topics of tragic romance and melancholy. Fans should expect these elements and more in her new album, Did you know that there’s a tunnel under Ocean Blvd, which will be released on Mar. 24, 2023.

The full tracklist was released Fri, Jan. 13. Following her pattern of wordy titles, one of the tracks is named Grandfather Please Stand on the Shoulders of My Father While He’s Deep Sea Fishing.

The title track and lead single, Did you know that there’s a tunnel under Ocean Blvd, was released on Dec. 7 of last year, along with the album announcement. Del Rey mentions many 20th century pop culture references in the song, which is something she has been doing for years. The tunnel that she mentions in the song is a real abandoned tunnel under Ocean Blvd Long Beach, California. The Los Angeles Times described it as “a long-forgotten Art Deco pedestrian tunnel” in 1992. The tunnel was built in 1927 for beach-goers to avoid the traffic-filled streets of Long Beach. Del Rey compares herself to the 181 foot long tunnel in this song, and begs to not be forgotten like the abandoned passage.

This album has many features, including Del Rey’s longtime collaborator, producer Jack Antonoff. Other features include Jon Batiste, SYML, Father John Misty, and Antonoff’s musical group, Bleachers. Antonoff helped produce some of Del Rey’s latest albums, including critically acclaimed Norman ****ing Rockwell, which was released in 2019, and Chemtrails Over the Country Club, which was released in 2021.

2022 was a quiet year for Del Rey, who covered singer Father John Misty’s Buddy’s Rendezvous and sang background vocals on musical collaborator Taylor Swift’s Snow on the Beach. For the past few years, Del Rey has been enjoying a quiet life with her loved ones in Southern California, releasing music occasionally, without promoting it much. Del Rey kept that strategy for her new album, only having one billboard to promote it. The billboard is on a highway in Tulsa, Oklahoma, the home city of her ex who broke up with her in 2020. On her private Instagram account, Del Rey posted a selfie with the billboard, captioning it, “There’s only one and it’s in Tulsa.” She then added in the comments, “It’s personal.” Since the lead single and the album’s announcement was also released on the same ex’s birthday, many fans speculate that the billboard was put there for him.

Did you know that there’s a tunnel under Ocean Blvd can be pre-ordered on Del Rey’s website, and from Target, Barnes & Noble, Amazon, and Urban Outfitters.
