Tips for new drivers and refreshers for experienced ones on the best ways to stay focused behind the wheel.

  • Off your phone!

One of the best ways to stay safe while driving is to stay off your phone while driving. While this is something we all know to do, it is something that tempts us all. To avoid temptation, put your phone is a location where you don’t feel as tempted. For example, your bag, in the center console, etc. Another way to stay off is putting your phone on Do Not Disturb While Driving feature that way notifications are not distracting you. Another great feature is to connect your phone to your car’s bluetooth system or apple carplay system. By connecting your phone, you can take calls or quickly control music while still staying off your phone. In the cases where using your phone cannot wait, pull over or go park somewhere then use your phone.

  • Be aware of your surroundings

A big part of driving safely is to be aware of your surroundings. Driving with friends and jamming out to music is loads of fun, but make sure to do it safely. Always keep your eyes on the road so that you are attentive and can make sure you’re not hitting something or watching out for hazards that may pop up on the road. While using bluetooth for calls can keep you off your phone, you can still get distracted. If you can’t stay focused, save the call for after your drive.

  • Being prepared

Driving can be a fun but dangerous thing and things can turn sour real quick. Be ready and prepared for accidents and emergencies. Hopefully this will not occur, but know the steps to take when you are involved in an accident. Another thing that is important to know is to change your tire. A tire can be punctured or ruined at any moment and you don’t want to be stranded somewhere because you don’t know. Another important thing to know is how to jumpstart a car. Having a battery die on you is something that can happen to anyone and being stranded while waiting for someone to show up sucks. Always have a pair of jumper cables and know how to use them. To make things easier, buy a portable jumper so that you don’t need someone else.
