Black Student Union organizes a drive asking students and staff to donate gloves this winter
This year, the Black Student Union (BSU) is doing a glove drive to help any families that the family liaisons are working with. This is their first drive, and, so far, they have seen success in receiving several pairs of gloves.
This is the first year BSU has done the glove drive and came up with the idea because they wanted to help underprivileged families in the Potomac Falls community. “I wanted Black Student Union to have a positive community impact and outreach,” said club sponsor Sarah Jones.
BSU is asking everyone in the club and around the school to donate gloves of any size. They can be dropped off to Jones in the counseling office.
Aside from the glove drive, BSU is a club with a mission to provide all students with opportunities to understand the issues that impact people of color. The members want the club to be a space where students can increase awareness on current and past events that have affected black people. “BSU strives to offer emotional, academic, and career support for all,” said Jones.
In a typical meeting, they may do anything from discussing colleges and post graduation goals to current events impacting Black culture. “I wanted and still want to strengthen the awareness of Black culture around the school,” said junior Saniya Coleman, vice president of the club. “I want people to know that BSU is a safe place and that everyone is always welcome.”
