Here is what to look forward to this December – from sports to fine arts, it will be a busy month at PFHS.
After Thanksgiving break there are several school events, concerts, and games panthers should look out for.
Sports
Boys varsity basketball has their home opener against Loudoun Valley High School on Tuesday, Dec. 3, at 7 PM. Spirit and anticipation are high considering our team’s winning streak of 23-1 last year. The Pit theme is “White Out”.
The girls varsity basketball team has their home opener against Rockridge on Dec. 6 at 6 PM. It’s another White Out game, so wash and rewear your gear from Tuesday night’s game.
Our swim team has a meet at Claude Moore on Saturday, Dec. 7 at noon. The team features several swimmers who went to states last year including: senior Gwyn Jackson, senior Claire Mcmahan, senior Soleil Antognoli, senior Mckenna Lyons, senior Mckenzie Speilman, senior Micaela Perezous, senior Jake Anderson, junior Ethan Hendershot, junior Thomas Kalka, junior Sydney Kish, junior Lina Minkara, and junior Jaden McCarney.
The other notable game is the Battle of Sterling on Dec. 20, for our boys basketball team. The team will host the Titans this year at 7:45 PM. Panther basketball has beat the Titans the last several years, so grab your winter whites yet again for a White Out Pit theme.
Concerts and Performances
On Thursday, Dec. 5, there will be a choir concert at 5:30 PM. The concert features all choir groups including Panthera A Capella, Show Choir, Cantate Choir, Chamber Choir and Jazz Choir. The groups have been rehearsing all year for the show, which will feature holiday songs including “(Everybody’s Waitin’ For) The Man with the Bag” and combined songs from “The Grinch” including Idina Menzel’s “We are Lights”. “People should come to the concert because we have so much talent in all of our classes that a lot of people just don’t know about, and I think it’s really cool to see the kind of things that we can put together in class. It’s such a cool experience to see, especially at the winter concert,” said senior Nicole Babb, who is in the Show Choir.
On Friday, Dec. 6, at 7 PM, there will be a SOFA improv show in the Black Box. Tickets cost $5 at the door so make sure to bring cash.
On Dec. 12 at 7 PM, there will be a band concert. The concert featured both the concert band and symphonic band. Each will play three pieces including a Nutcracker medley, Arabesque, and Gavorkna Fanfare. The concert features a clarinet solo by Fernando Weld. “Listening to music can be really entertaining and hearing all these instruments together can be an experience,” said Weld.
On Dec. 17, there will be a combined guitar concert at 7 PM featuring Potomac Falls and Riverbend Middle School, and then on Dec. 18 at 7 PM, Guitar will have their annual winter concert. It features traditional folk songs with one of the pieces composed by an LCPS teacher. A raffle will be held during the concert so make sure to bring some cash.
On Dec. 20, before winter break starts, SCA is hosting the winter pep rally. Each grade will be assigned a holiday color to wear, and the classes will face off in the annual lip sync competition by belting out some of the most festive holiday songs. “It’s going to be really exciting with lots of fun games and competition. It’s going to involve all kinds of students and teachers. It’s really something to look forward to,” said junior Cat Hechter, SCA member and president of Junior Advisory Board.
