More than just a tournament

Honoring an alumnus with a childhood favorite

The Nicole Megaloudis Foundation was created in honor of 2003 graduate Nicole Megaloudis who was killed in a car accident on her way back to VCU on Feb. 9, 2004. She had just started her college soccer career and was on her way to changing the world through service work for the underprivileged. Her mother started the foundation to fulfill Nicole’s dream of helping the less fortunate, especially those in Haiti. The foundation keeps Nicole’s memory alive by giving scholarships to students who demonstrate financial need and extraordinary leadership skills in their community.

In memory of Nicole and in support of her foundation, the Potomac Falls SCA and a few of Nicole’s friends, who were still in high school at the time, created the dodgeball tournament a year after her passing.  “It’s special to me because Nicole Megaloudis was one of my good friends throughout high school and we graduated together,” said Family and Consumer Sciences teacher and SCA sponsor Alexandra Swinimer.

Since it’s inception, the dodgeball tournament has become a tradition carried on by SCA every spring.  The school gets excited for the tournament by eagerly organizing teams of ten or more members and develops spirit by creating team uniforms and team chants. “I’ve been participating in the tournament since my sophomore year, and I just love playing with my friends and being competitive,” said senior Josh Curl.

This year marks the tournament’s tenth anniversary and will be held on Sat. March 15 at 2:00 p.m. in the main gym.

In effort to spice up the tournament, the semi-finals and finals have been moved to March 21 during FLEX so that students can bypass SSR and leave class to watch the tournament for $1.

“I’m excited for some of the changes the SCA has made to raise more awareness and money for the foundation,” said Swinimer.

Teams with a minimum of ten players can register for $50. Applications for the tournament are due on March 11 to Ms. Swinimer in room 114 and can be found on the SCA bulletin board across from room 226.
