Coldplay frontman to be an advisor on The Voice

The Voice, a reality singing competition, is known for their spinning chairs and four celebrity mentors that form groups among the aspiring singers who audition. The original judging panel consisted of Adam Levine, Blake Shelton, CeeLo Green, and Christina Aguilera. Green and Aguilera, however were replaced this season by Shakira and Usher. Fans were all too excited to see Usher become part of the judging panel, but some were wary of Shakira.

“Nothing against Shakira, but it seems like she doesn’t take it as seriously as the other judges do,” said senior Phil Tsoi.

As if this change was not enough; a new and overall celebrity mentor was revealed via social media, and many were excited to see that it was Coldplay frontman, Chris Martin.

“Chris Martin definitely has a unique style compared to Blake [Shelton], Shakira, Usher, and Adam [Levine]. Adam is probably the closest to his style, but Chris’s voice still sets him apart. Therefore, I think that he can bring diversity and great advice to contestants,” said sophomore Angelique Arintok.

There is no denying that Martin knows what he is doing in the music industry, as Coldplay is one of the most well-recognized bands in the world with five albums and a sixth set to release in mid-May.

“He’s [Martin] good at what he does, and the coaches know that. That’s why they chose him as a celebrity judge,” said Tsoi.

The decision to have an overall celebrity advisor is one that is generally well received among viewers. Many would agree that it is a refreshing change to the same celebrity judge instructing the contestants on what to do.

“It’s good to have additional people in the process because the more heads they put together, the better the results will be in the Battle Rounds,” said Arintok.

The Voice draws its audience from the same base as American Idol, though there might be a bit of a bigger following for The Voice because of the different and well-known celebrities that are and have been on the show. With different celebrities such as Martin as advisors, the judging panel is only doing good things for the contestants to genuinely help them in the music industry.

“They [the judges] actually want to help, unlike American Idol. The Voice has a better mission of what they’re trying to do. They’re actually trying to have people succeed. It’s not like they’re trying to tear them apart; the judges are on their side,” said Tsoi.

Martin will appear on The Voice April 1 and April 7.
