Out with the old, in with the new

Ms. Lexi Swiminer discusses the SCA experience

New to sponsoring Student Council Association, Ms. Lexi Swiminer is preparing for a year with new officers.

Her first year went great, and maybe even better than expected.

“When it comes to the first time with anything, there’s a moment you realize you don’t know what you don’t know. However, [English teacher] Mr. [David] Quirin was here to help me out as well as Dr. Noto,” said Swinimer. As the new year approaches, she has created two big goals for herself and the new SCA members.

“I would like to create an inter club council where leadership skills are taught to club leaders and teach them how to get involved with our school. I would also like to have more groups and clubs work together as seen with both the Kentucky Derby fundraiser and spirit day,” said Swiminer.

Even with only one year under her belt, Ms. Swiminer would like to make some sort of tradition out of getting to know the new SCA members. Last year, her and the officers went out to lunches together, which built better relationships and better collaboration. In terms of getting to know the new members better, she has a different idea than the previous year.

“I’m hoping to do some sort of dinner or picnic with both the new and old members,” said Swinimer. She believes this will loosen the stress and nervousness as the new members are able to ask the old officers what to expect and how to handle it. Some traditions will remain the same.

“Every year there is the candle ceremony,” said Swinimer. At this ceremony, old members pass down lit candles to the new members, welcoming them to their position. New traditions are also on the way.

“Outgoing members will have SCA stoles at their graduation and the new members will receive pins,” said Swinimer.

Swinimer took her new position with stride and enjoyed every minute of it. She was “blessed” with the group of kids this year, and can’t wait to see who she will be working with next year.

“Building that relationship and trust is important so we can hit the ground running,” said Swinimer.
