Editorial: SO Ready for Hillary

As the 2016 presidential election approaches, the possible candidates running for election are beginning to spark controversy. Current New Jersey governor Chris Christie was thought to be a shoo-in selection for the Republican ticket; however, his recent bridge scandal appears to have left the Republican party rethinking their choices and now at a loss for a promising candidate. Although this proves to be problematic for the right wingers, the Democratic party is now more secure in their selection than ever. Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, although she has not officially declared she will run, has become the face of the Democratic party for the 2016 elections.

It’s about damn time something positive gets accomplished in the White House. Tradition has told Americans that men are the proper candidate to be the head of our country, alas tradition has also taught us that this doesn’t always end well. Theodore Roosevelt’s barbaric method of obtaining the Panama Canal, Andrew Jackson’s trail of tears, and Richard Nixon’s infamous Watergate scandal all support the fact that certain men aren’t the most suitable for running this country. If we look back even further into tradition, England thrived off of it’s monarchy when women were the head. Queen Elizabeth and Queen Victoria did more than enrich the country, they proved that women are a powerful being. It’s time we went back to our roots and tried rulling things the way our mother country has: productively with a woman figure head.

Given, my allegiance to Hillary may appear biased since I too am a woman, and by extent, support actions and people who empower my gender. However, Hillary is far more than just an equalist (which is only another one of her many selling point).

Hillary is in fact an equalist, being that she wants the same rights and opportunity for all regardless of gender or sexuality. She stands for freedom for women’s reproductive rights, stating how “…abortion should remain legal, but it needs to be safe and rare,” and for gay rights as well, supporting that gay soldiers need to shoot straight, not be straight. Hillary is also active in attempting to rid sex trafficking of women and young girls as she traveled the world and was exposed to the treatment of women and the nightlife they live in different countries. She is an equalist, firmly believing in equality for every gender and sexuality. Hillary is also dedicated to equality and reform in the school system, stating how special education and classrooms should be fully funded, increase teacher salaries, and promotes public schools and aiding in their advancement.

Typically, most equalists are thought to have big plans with minimal funds thus hindering their ability to see their big plans through. However, not for Hillary! It was announced Ready for Hillary, a nationwide movement encouraging the former Secretary of State to run for president, had raised over a million dollars in June 2013. The early signs of support only reassuring the fact that raising money will not be an issue for her campaign.

Although Americans are gathering to financially support Hillary, she is also working to support middle class America. As the gap widens, Hillary takes a sharp focus on the middle class, her goal is to deal with the effect of the subprime mortgage crisis, by helping families with low income pay for higher energy costs, extending unemployment insurance, and to possibly provide some tax refunds. With taxes, she also plans to reform former President George W. Bush’s tax cuts, although this may sound bad to anyone with a tight wallet, she mentions how this reform will give more money back to the struggling American people instead of those who do not need it as direly. Hillary’s universal goal is to help the majority, to bring equality, and fix the America that has been tainted with over indulged capitalism and greed. As Mrs. Clinton put it best, “We’ll never accomplish what we need to do for our children if we burden them with a debt they didn’t create. Franklin Roosevelt said that Americans of his generation had a rendezvous with destiny. It’s time to protect the next generation by using our budget surplus to pay down the national debt, save Social Security, modernize Medicare with a prescription drug benefit, and provide targeted tax cuts to the families who need them most.”

Hillary is more than capable to run the country, she is highly intellectual and experienced. As the former Secretary of State, she is the most knowledgeable about foreign affairs and communication. Most people don’t remember that she is in fact experienced and obtains a quality that our current president seems to lack; the ability to handle any situation not directly involving the United States. Even with this prestigious amount of experience under her belt, some are still ignorant to her power. As a fellow peer once ignorantly told me, “Foreign countries won’t listen or respect her because she is a woman.” This is in fact incorrect. In fact, the Secretary of State position has been dominantly held by women in the past and, you know what, certain countries don’t respect our current MALE president simply because of his actions and thoughts, not his gender.

Hillary is a viable option to lead our country, although many don’t agree with her because of her gender or because her personality tends to be more brusque and aggressive than the typical female, but that only allows her to get the job done. If she were a man, she would be viewed as dedicated and assertive, but because her personality is one atypical to a woman, she is declared a b*tch. But as Tina Fey put it best, “B*TCHES GET SH*T DONE!” And if she does run and win the upcoming 2016 election, it will mark a glorious shift in the way Americans think and treat women, it will be a milestone for our country.
