Coffee and SOFA in the House
Coffee House and SOFA combine for this year’s spring show
The scent of coffee, the shock over the hidden talents that your friends hold, and the laid back banter; sound familiar? This year’s Coffee House will be the usual scene with the added bonus of a SOFA show. Over the years, Coffee House has expanded from the traditional open mic to allow poetry readings and Panthera, but the addition of SOFA has generated mixed reactions.
“I would rather have all musicians because it’s a Coffee House for musicians, but if you think about it, it’s been expanding since they added poetry. I guess I like old Coffee House,” said junior Connor Hitchcock.
Hitchcock has performed in all of the Coffee Houses during his high school career and is generally in favor of individual talents performing at Coffee House versus school organized programs, but he looks forward to seeing how the night will unfold.
Junior Leanne Machorton has also performed in all of the Coffee Houses before now; however, she thinks combining the two shows will benefit everyone in the long run.
“At first we were kind of hesitant because we were worried about stealing each other’s audiences, but now we’re splitting up the time, and it’ll work really well because we have a bigger audience,” said Machorton.
By combining the two shows, there will be a larger, more unprecedented audience than if it was just Coffee House or just SOFA. Some students prefer to have just Coffee House or just SOFA, but the majority of students like the idea of combining both shows, especially since they will pay five dollars to see both.
“It’s a big performance base, and it’s a chance for everyone to show their talents. SOFA is a good way to make everyone relax because it’s comedy,” said sophomore Hannah Brown.
Everyone will need a laugh when they realize it will be the last night for seniors to perform and show their talent, which makes every spring show emotional and sentimental. Seniors are ready to graduate right when the final bell rings during their junior year, but it does not quite hit the juniors or underclassmen that the seniors will eventually leave until the last few weeks of school.
“I’m more proud of them [this year’s seniors] because they’re going off to college and I think college is a great step of life. It’s more nostalgic than anything,” said Brown.
Junior Luke Borman is also reluctant to say goodbye to the seniors who are in SOFA.
“I’m going to miss the seniors. I don’t know how we’re going to survive without them next year. It’s going to be a lot different. Our seniors are our best performers,” said Borman.
The spring Coffee House will definitely be one to go to, since students would be able to see this year’s seniors perform in their last show. It will, no doubt, be a night of laughs, incredible talent, memories, and, obviously, coffee.
