Comedians, Amy Poehler and Tina Fey hosted the Golden Globes for the third year in a row this January.

Award show season tends to liven up mid-winter when most people are between holidays and dreaming of spring.  There is just something about the red carpet interviews, awkwardly scripted jokes, and carefully planned acceptance speeches– especially the ‘your speech is too long, please exit the stage’ music.  The red carpet gowns set trends that women drool over all year long and movies and television shows that score big wins often see a huge increase in popularity.

Many students do not watch the big award shows because they fall in the middle of one of the most stressful times of the school year.  They do have an impact, however, because the awarded elite determine which actors to watch out for, which films to see, and which TV shows to binge on.  Senior Hayley Diegtel’s favorite award show is the Golden Globes–the show that kicks off the season.

The host of the show can completely change the feeling of it and the audience that it attracts. Funnier hosts are definitely trendy seeing that Tina Fey and Amy Poehler have hosted as a duo the past three years in a row, Ellen Degeneres killed the Oscar’s last year with her historic selfie featuring every relevant celebrity, and Neil Patrick Harris is up next for the hosting role.

Junior Josephine Sherwood is a big fan of the Amy Poehler- Tina Fey duo and has been happy with their hosting job over the years.

“Someone needs to vote them for President at some point [Tina Fey and Amy Poehler]; it’d be a much happier country,” said Sherwood.

The Fashion Statements:

Because the Golden Globes is essentially the unofficial start to award show season, many see it as a preview of what celebrity’s styles will be for that year.  Diegtel feels that part of the excitement of the show is the fashion.

“They [the award shows] are all kind of similar, but Golden Globes seems the one that people take most seriously or dress up the most for,” she said.

According to Vanity Fair, the Best Dressed women this year included Emma Stone, Lupita Nyong’o, and Amal Clooney.  From another perspective, E’s Fashion Police deemed Kate Hudson as one of the best and Keira Knightley and Lana del Rey the worst dressed of the night.

There was some controversy over Selma because while it was nominated for Best Picture, star, David Oyelowo was not nominated for best actor.   These days people are waiting to see the movies from home and, the awards show people which movies to seek.  Senior Hayley Diegtel admits that she will often wait to see newer movies.

“I don’t really go to new movies a lot, but I think that Wild with Reese Witherspoon should get a really good award,” said Diegtel.

The 87th Annual Oscars will be held on Feb 22, 2015.
