Ballin’ for a budget
Varsity volleyball starts their next season fundraising
From the outside, volleyball is a seemingly simple sport. All one must do is get a pass, a set, and then spike the ball over the net. However, it is laced with complexities often not recognized at first glance to amateur players. Amateur, however, are the type of players who will be playing in the Varsity volleyball team’s fundraiser tournament this Sat., April 25. The tournament is in an effort to raise money for new uniforms for Varsity next season.
The tournament is similar in style to the Nicole Megaloudis Dodgeball Tournament, with students and staff forming teams to play against each other on Saturday, and the winners of the tournament facing the Varsity team during a flex block, a date that is to be determined.
“It will be a round robin type tournament, and we [the Varsity team] will be line judging and reffing it,” said junior Holly Carlton.
The idea was born from the minds of the team’s junior players, Holly Carlton, Stefanie Mutter, and Melanie Gonzalez, as a new way to fundraise.
“We usually don’t do much fundraising, but since its [Coach] Lachey Helms’ last year, we wanted to have jerseys with our names on them to keep the memory,” said Carlton.
Last season the team went 17-11, making it to the regional semifinals, where they lost to Briar Woods after four sets.
All the players are helping run the tournament, and are inviting anyone to make a team and participate this Saturday.
“It’s a really good way to support the program, and it’s a lot of fun,” said sophomore Amanda Bisnath.
The Varsity team is accepting team formations through Saturday, and have a table set up outside of the cafeteria if a group is interested.
“We will also be accepting money on Saturday for teams that get together last minute,” said Carlton.
“This tournament is for all the boys who say that they can beat the Varsity team; now’s your chance!” said Carlton.
