Teaching Spirit

Students aren’t the only ones who dress up for Homecoming

When people think of homecoming week, most people only think of the spirited students who dress up in costume. Many students do participate, but there are also teachers who like to join in on the fun as well.

This year’s homecoming spirit days are sporting event day, movie day, famous figure day, derby day, and class color day. Several teachers have plans for the days and hope to surprise the students as they get their chance to join in the fun. Learning Specialist Clare Badgley enjoys dressing for all of the spirit days.

“I love any excuse to dress up in costume, and so I always try to participate every year… I definitely dressed up for every spirit day in high school,” said Badgley.

Some spirit days can be hard to decide on what costume to wear. Sometimes people don’t dress up on account of the possible money that might go into the costume like social science teacher Lynn Ewald.

“[I dress up] If I have the means to dress up and don’t have to buy something extra,” said Ewald.

Many students like to dress up in groups of people. There sometimes can be a struggle to coordinate outfits, and for teachers it’s no different.

“The group thing I might be doing with the other ladies in the social studies, but that’s a secret because I don’t even know if we’re going to be doing it,” said social science teacher Jennifer High.

There is the belief that students don’t get much work done during the week of homecoming because of the costumes and excitement surrounding the week. With some teachers participating, there is the possibility of more distraction. However, math teacher Carly Fabris believes that it just makes the classroom setting more fun for the week.

“I think it gets everybody excited. I think it’s a great way to get people pumped up for homecoming… It might get a little bit silly, but I think the students are still able to focus,” said Fabris.

As the excitement starts for a week of fun, everybody gets a chance to join in. While the week is fun for the students, it can also be fun for the teachers.

“[Other staff members] ask me for ideas and try and to get involved too. I would love to more staff members dress up though,” said Badgley.
