Op-ED

Alike many government run operations the school system has a budget, also alike these government run operations the school budget is always tight forcing the school board to cut certain activities.
The school board’s selection of budget cuts often force the students or teachers to suffer, an example of this is lack of transportation for students participating in after school activities like clubs or sports. The students often must find their own ride home, this may not seem like a big deal for upperclassmen who have a car and a driver’s license but this affects all children in sixth through tenth grade. Most of these children’s parents are working around the time that these after school activities are ending, leaving kids to look to older friends for rides or have a parent leave early for work. Some parents know they won’t be able to pick their kids up from these activities and so they won’t allow their children to participate limiting the opportunities for these kids. This is unfair and quite honestly a ridiculous cut, students are supposed to be number one priority when it comes to what the school board and should not cut.
There are examples of this injustice here at Potomac Falls, students who are participating in basketball must walk from Potomac falls to river bend middle school. This may not be a terribly long walk but these students are carrying their athletic bags with this is also unsafe because most students walk in small groups where they could fall and hurt themselves or even be abducted.
This is unfair for students but the after school sport that suffers the most is the swim team, the swim team obviously needs a pool in order to practice, so the team must go to the nearest rec center Claude Moore. This is about a fifteen minute drive depending on where you live, the time of one practice is inconvenient and also nearly impossible for working parents to get their kids to. Many underclassmen get rides from upperclassmen, however most upperclassmen can only take one student in their car, causing there to be a lack of rides for the students. This makes it nearly impossible to get to practice.
There is a solution if they had one bus, we only need one pick up the students from Potomac Falls around four fifteen to four thirty the bus could then drop the students off at Claude Moore, by the time practice was over parents would be able to pick up students. There are other schools in loudoun county that do this so why not here at Potomac falls?
