Spring Sports Preview: Girl’s Varsity Tennis

Athletics are  a very big part of the youth nowadays, and lots of people are getting involved. Tennis tends to be a sport that is often overlooked, but this year’s girls varsity tennis team strives to do their best.

“I’m confident for this year’s season. We have a really good team and we’re just going to do our best and have fun with it,” said junior Emily Hoang.

The team has many new members this year, and this is a significant change for the older team members, but they still work together as a team, have the same expectations, and all plan to reach the same goal, to improve from last season.

“Even though I’m still a beginner, I want to contribute as much as possible and try my best to help the team achieve what they haven’t yet,” said new junior team member, Samanzar Mahbub.

The team’s goals this year are to improve their skill in the sport, develop their communication, and to hopefully win their first match. They plan to perform their best by continuous conditioning and practice, and by keeping a positive attitude throughout the season.

“You have to get in the right mental state to have success. Of course, you also need to know the proper strokes and have those basic skills as well,” said Hoang.

Each player of a team is significant. They each contribute to the team in their own unique way and bring something new to the table. A team should be a positive community of people who build each other up, and the girl’s varsity tennis team is showing just that.

“Everyone makes the team stand out. They’re all very kind, and inclusive. The team feels like one big family,” said 12-year senior tennis player, Julia Thomas.

The new coach has a positive outlook for the team. She loves the girls and appreciates all they do to improve. She has high expectations that the girls are having fun and performing their best this year.

“Every member of the team brings something new, but I would say that our team captains, Julia Thomas and Janine Lorenzo really stepped up to lead the team and organize things.” said Gibson.

Though tennis is underestimated a lot, the sport requires a lot of skill, strategy, and communication. The coach is a big contribution to success within the team. Coaches direct the players to better themselves and their overall performance.

“Every coach is important, and if they figure out a mistake, you should try your best to correct it, so you can become a very successful player,” said Mahbub.

There is also an interest aspect that influences success in sports. The passion is there before the skill, and having the desire to improve will influence working hard towards a larger goal.

“The girls have a passion for the sport and have the desire to improve. They are committed to the team, have a good time playing, and are working to live up to their potential,” said Gibson.
