As conference champions last year, the Potomac Falls varsity track and field team has high hopes for the 2017 spring season.

“This year I want to bring unity between the different teams so the different distances can work together and get along better,” said junior hurdler Sarah Holz.

The varsity track team is full of runners, sprinters, jumpers, and throwers all excited for the upcoming season. Junior Jad Raqi has been running on the 4×100-meter-relay every since his freshman year, and the Panthers have competed in the relay at the state meet each year since. They plan to return to the state finals again this year stronger than ever.

“Our team’s best aspect is that we don’t look the part, but our running does the talking for us. [The team] focuses on all muscle groups to help us get faster and we focus on being mentally strong,” said Raqi.

One of the most important aspects of being on a sports team is what you do behind the scenes. Not only have the short distance runners and throwers been in the weight room often, the long distance runners have also been running five to 10 miles a day to help ensure endurance throughout the season.

“It’s the off-season conditioning where you really get a feel for the environment of the runners, as individuals and as a team. This season everyone has shown great strength, and we all get along really well, which is always a super important aspect,” said junior Shea Brady. Brady runs the one-mile event.

Key meets are the home meet on May 3 against Briar Woods and the conference championship on May 15 and 16. Location is to be announced. You can find the schedule in the link below.
