A mini profile on the PFHS Plastic Symphony

Performing at Potomac Falls’ Coffeehouse and other events surrounding the school is the Plastic Symphony, a group making music with a mix of kazoos and plastic percussion instruments.

The Plastic Symphony creates kazoo covers for events such as the stated Potomac Falls’ Coffeehouse, Ridgetop Coffeehouse’s Open Mic Nights, and Bingo Nights around Sterling.

Performing members have a choice of either kazoos or any other plastic instrument provided by the club such as plastic drums, boom whackers, and recorders. For Plastic Symphony President Molly Lum, her preferred choice of instrument is the kazoo.

“I usually just play the kazoo, but the plastic drum set is pretty awesome too,” said Lum.

When it comes to rehearsals for their concerts, the group spends their meetings discussing possible song choices and which member will be assigned which part. Sometimes, choreography is also incorporated into the performances.

Although the Plastic Symphony is a music-based group, no musical experience is required to participate. Lum says any interested students are encouraged to join the group in creating plastic covers of great songs.

“…you should totally join because it’s a fun, tight-knit, low-stress group that likes to mess around on kazoos and play our favorite songs,” said Lum.
