Prince Harry and Meghan Markle joined Oprah for a bombshell interview, in which the reality of what life is like in the royal family is exposed.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle sat down for an interview with Oprah, aired on March 7, 2021, in which they revealed the truth behind their decision to part ways with the royal family, along with insight as to what being a member of the royal family was really like.
This was the couple’s first interview since their exit as members of the royal family, in which they announced they’re still on good terms with most family members despite the controversy their decision caused. Markle, who has been a victim of the British media outlets ever since joining the family, expressed the feeling of helplessness and hopelessness she felt, describing her situation as a trap she was unable to escape.
In a statement, Markle said, “I’ve advocated for so long for women to use their voice, and then I was silent.” Oprah followed up with, “Were you silent or were you silenced?” and Markle returned, “The latter.”
Markle opened up about her mental health struggles she faced as a result of the pressure and comments from the media. She even admitted to having suicidal thoughts, and in a shocking bombshell, accused the ‘institution’ of denying her access to the help she needed. “I just didn’t want to be alive anymore,” said Markle.
Markle also went on to claim that members of the family had expressed concern over the color of their baby’s skin, and how dark the child might be.
In response to the interview, British media have only worsened their attacks on Markle, with news outlets such as The Daily Mail fueling the fire against her.
Markle, who uses her voice to advocate for feminism, gender equality, and other human rights movements, seemed relieved to be finally able to share her truth with the world. Both her and Prince Harry have relocated to California, where they reside as a happy family separated from the harsh world of the British Monarchy.
