A List of 13 Must-Watch Spooky TV Shows

Contined from The Roar Magazine: Struggling to look for a show to watch? Now that it’s spooky season, there are a lot of fun, scary, and even horrific series’ that are perfect to watch right now. Here is a list of shows that you just have to consider watching this Halloween season.

The Haunting of Hill House (2018)

The Crain family, broken by the terrors they experienced in their youth, must return to Hill House, where they lived for a short while, and face the horrors that forced them to leave after the mysterious death of their sister, Eleanor Crain. This is a haunting, exciting story about a family struggling to heal and move on. Flashing between the past and present, the Crains experience terrifying events, but they must overcome them and finally face the horrors at Hill House. This is a great story about healing and taming fear.

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (2018-2020)

Sabrina Spellman, half-witch, half-human, must fight against the evils that threaten her, her friends, and her family. It is a coming-of-age story that includes romance, heartbreak, horror, and action. Sabrina faces the divide between the human world and witch world, finally taking her place in her coven, while trying not to lose her footing in the human world. This series combines a scary storyline with teenage drama and heartbreak, which makes it very fun to stream.

Penny Dreadful (2014-2016)

This is a creepy adaptation of the books by James Malcom Rymer and Thomas Peckett Prest where classic characters including Frankenstein, Dorian Gray, and more make an appearance. It follows the story of Vanessa Ives, a very Catholic, retired colonial-African explorer, Sir Malcom Murray, and Ethan Chandler as they fight through a supernatural mystery, encountering classic folklore and urban legend creatures along the way. It’s a very gratifying adaptation of the books and is rather unique.

Black Mirror (2011-present)

A story where a warped world with the most high-tech innovations and darkest impulses collide, this show is filled with modern-day horrors. Each episode is set in a slightly different reality. It demonstrates how modern technology can go against us and takes a look at darker aspects of society. It is haunting and thrilling, making it difficult not to binge watch. 

The Vampire Diaries (2009-2017)

This series follows the story of Elena Gilbert who recently lost her parents in a car accident that she survived. Soon after, she meets two brothers, the Salvatores, and falls in love with one of them, Stefan. The two brothers fight to protect Elena from harm as they fight various threats to her and their town. Elena must juggle the troubles in her home life and the supernatural world at the same time. This show carries a lot of drama, romance, and action that makes it so entertaining.

Supernatural (2005-2020)

This show follows the story of Sam and Dean Winchester, two brothers who investigate paranormal activity and hunt the supernatural. Many of these supernatural occurrences are based on classic folklore and there is a new urban legend explored in every episode. After the mysterious death of Sam’s girlfriend, they must reconcile the evils from their past, always sticking together.

The Walking Dead (2010-present)

Rick Grimes, a former police officer, and his friends and family must fight to survive in a post-apocalyptic world. The event that caused the apocalypse was the sudden appearance of a virus that caused people to die and then come back as flesh-eating zombies. At the end of the world, people become ruthless, and the real enemy proves to be humans who will do anything to survive. This show is very gory, realistic, and displays mature themes, but it’s executed so well that it is captivating.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997-2003)

Buffy Summers, a teenager living in the town of Sunnydale, is bestowed with mystical powers to help her fight the supernatural. She is descended from the “Old Ones,” evil creatures that ruled the world before humans, and who hope to regain their power and reign over the earth once more. Buffy moved from her old house to Sunnydale in an effort to escape her fate, but her mentor, Rupert Giles, reminds her that she has a responsibility to face the evils that threaten her. This show is a classic, and it perfectly intertwines horror, comedy, and romance.

The Haunting of Bly Manor (2020)

Similar to its predecessor, The Haunting of Hill House, this show follows the events that occur at a manor located in the United Kingdom. Most of these events occur after the arrival of a woman, Dani Clayton, who was hired as a nanny to watch over the niece and nephew of the owner who live at the house. She is unaware that the manor is haunted, but soon sees and experiences terrifying things. It’s a very exciting sequel to The Haunting of Hill House, and gives us more horror as well as the return of a few of the actors from its predecessor. 

American Horror Story (2011-present)

This horror series tells a different story each season, with different characters and different settings. The first season is centered around the Harmon family, who move to Los Angeles for a fresh start. They move into a mansion, unaware that the ghosts of the former residents and their victims remain at the house. It is very thrilling and definitely a remarkable story.

Stranger Things (2016-present)

Set in Hawkins, Indiana, the people of a small town discover the secrets of a government lab after the disappearance of a young boy, Will Byers. These findings include sinister beasts and portals to other worlds. The show starts out with Will seeing a mysterious monster who abducts him, and his mother eventually sees the beast herself, convincing her that Will is in grave danger. His friends begin to investigate, discovering a young girl, Eleven, who has psychokinetic abilities, and was experimented on in the lab. This series displays several cliffhangers and shows the development of its characters in a way that is addicting.

Teen Wolf (2011-2017)

This show centers around Scott McCall, a teenager living in Beacon Hills, a fictional town in California. After being bitten by a werewolf, he transforms into one himself. His ordinary life turns upside down, and he faces many new challenges with his new identity. He works alongside his best friend, Stiles, to overcome the difficulties of his new life. It is a great story of a classic folklore creature that includes teenage drama, mature themes, and romance.

Castle Rock (2018-2019)

This series is set in the Stephen King multiverse and is inspired by a number of King’s works. It tells servaral tales, exploring a number of genres and themes. Henry Deaver, a death row attorney, returns to his home in Maine when an inmate from the local prison, Shawshank, specifically requests for him to be his attorney. Several storylines unfold from here in an exciting, horrific tale. This leads Henry to dive into the mysteries of his past and confront them. It’s a great show because it intertwines several classic Stephen King settings, characters, and themes in one plot in a way that it all blends together perfectly.
