Have you entered the world of Wordle?

Wordle is an online daily word puzzle that went viral in late 2021. The game grew significantly from roughly 90 players in Nov 2021 to over 300,000 by early Jan 2022. Players have six attempts to guess the five letter word of the day. After every guess, the game highlights which of the letters you guessed are in the daily word and which are not. Here are some tips and tricks to help you keep your Wordle streak alive:

  1. The Color Code to Live By

Wordle highlights the letters of words in different colors to help the player catalog used letters. Green signifies letters in the right place, yellow signifies letters that are in the word but are in the wrong place, and gray signifies letters that are not in the daily word. Make sure you avoid reusing gray letters since they won’t be in the final word.

  1. Start Out Strong

Deciding what word you should start with is arguably the most important decision in the game. The first word you choose can make or break your chance to arrive at the chosen word. One strategy for the first word is to use as many vowels as possible and then follow up with consonants based on the matched letters. Another strategy is to use as many consonants in the first attempt and then focus on the vowels in the second try.

  1. Pick Two Completely Different Words in the First Two Lines

The key to guessing the target word is to eliminate as many letters as possible. Using two different words that don’t share any letters in the first two attempts can help narrow down the possible words significantly.

  1. A Potential Double Letter Day?

While playing, it can be easy to forget that a letter can occur multiple times in the word of the day. When looking to hone in on the last letter or two, try doubling up on letters such as “L” or “T”.

  1. Work Smarter Not Harder

When you’re missing one letter but have many possibilities for the last letter, choose a single word that includes as many potential letters as possible. For example, if you have “SHA_E,” your options include M, P, D. Try a word such as MOPED to find the last letter. This strategy will save you an attempt or two!

  1. Feeling Brave? Try Hard Mode

Hard Mode requires you to use all the found letters. This means you have to use green or yellow highlighted letters once revealed. While Hard Mode may sound harder, it actually keeps you on the right track since you can’t use letters that are not part of the word.
