Best Nature Spots in NOVA
Fall favorites: Best nature spots in Northern Virginia
With the start of November, Northern Virginia has reached the middle of its fall season. The leaves have almost all fallen off of the trees and the weather is cooling off in preparation for winter. So what can you do to get the most out of these last warmer fall days?
Claude Moore Park and Algonkian Park are two of the closest locations to Potomac Falls and are great locations for hiking, walking, and enjoying the natural beauty of NOVA. Located along the Algonkian River, Algonkian park has picnic locations, trails, and a boat dock to sit and relax at. Claude Moore park also has rentable pavilions and benches along its many trails. The park also features two ponds, where people can fish.
Down route 28 is Georgetown Pike, a small windy road that has ever changing speed limits. As you drive down, the woods seem to unfold around you. On Old Dominion Drive alongside Georgetown Pike, is Great falls. Sitting on 800 acres, this park is home to many wildlife and many activities. Running through the park is the Potomac River, and spreading out on either side are rocky cliffs where patrons can climb and hike. The only downside to this park is the entry fee which currently stands at $20 per car.
For Homecoming and Prom, students also like to visit local parks for pictures. Morven park in Leesburg, and Meadowlark in Vienna are the two most popular. Morven park consists of historical sites along its large grassy lawns. The park consists of 3 museums, an equestrian center, and sports complexes on its 1000 acres. Meadowlark botanical gardens, approximately 20 minutes away, doesn’t have as many activities as Morven. With a $3 entry for ages 6-17 and $6 for 18 and above, the park has picnic locations, a pond, bridge, gazebos, and a gift shop. Unfortunately during the colder months the park closes early at 3:30.
Getting outside to either one of these many parks in NOVA can be a fun activity for you or your family. There are only so many warmer days left in the year, so take advantage of them while you can.
