An overlook of the elective, choir

It is not uncommon to hear multiple voices harmonizing as one whilst walking down the halls. This can be heard anywhere from the art hallway to the auditorium, practicing for the next concert. This year, Potomac Falls choir has expanded and gained quite the reputation.

Choir offers different leadership positions from the traditional group role offering a great opportunity to be heard unlike other classroom settings. Senior Markus Ellis is jazz choir president and varsity choir teaching assistant. Senior Jonathon Walker is jazz choir vice president, and senior Adrienne Thompson is the all girl choir, Panthera president. Choir has also broadly expanded this year.

“Choir is much bigger than last year, jazz choir even doubled from 16 to 32 members,” said Ellis.

Just halfway through the year, choir students have already had amazing achievements and opportunities.

“In the winter of 2013, Markus Ellis made all-state choir as Bass I,” said Walker. To be apart of the all-state choir, an upperclassmen privilege, students must make it into and perform in the district choir audition. It is a much more prestigious honor to be apart of the all-state choir because only two people from each voice part, such as Bass I and Bass II, are allowed in. This year, the event will be taking place in Harrisonburg on May 10. Choir students will be practicing Thursday to Saturday morning preparing before the concert.

Every year, choir votes on a trip to an amusement park of their choice. Last year, the trip began at a local high school where they sang for a national competition, afterwhich they headed over to Hershey Park where they later found out their results. Besides the fact that the this trip is quite the incentive to join choir, there are other reasons people sign up for this popular elective.

“Choir has given me the opportunity to talk to students I wouldn’t normally talk to and has broaden my horizons,” said Walker. Ellis agrees and explains it is one of his favorite classes.

“The environment is very welcoming and full of people with the same love for the arts,” said Ellis.

While the year may be half way over, choir has many events coming up.

“District assessment is coming up in March,” said Ellis. This event mostly consists of Loudoun Country choir groups. They are judged on appearance, sound quality, and solos amongst other things.

“May 1 is our spring concert, which takes place right here at Potomac Falls,” said Walker. The spring concert is the last concert of the year, meaning it is the last time for seniors to preform. The song, “Here’s To Song”, is sung to play tribute to their last performance. At the end of the concert, roses are handed to all of the seniors.

When thinking of what classes to sign up for next year, electives are never a regret. Choir offers many different aspects such as leadership positions, a chance to meet new people, and the opportunity to travel for different concerts.
