Fall Sports Wrap-up: Girls Cross Country

The girls cross country team enjoyed a successful season this fall.  The team of 54 girls ran at eight season meets and finished in eighth place at the state meet in the 5A classification.

“It was a great season.  We had a very young team,” said Coach Dolph Null, “the first two runners were freshmen and sophomores.”  Freshman Kelly Mogensen carries the season’s record for the 5,000 meter run, with a time of 19:20.1, and sophomore Deirdre Gilmore carries the season’s record for the 3 mile with a time of 19:35.0.

Despite having strep throat, Gilmore ran at the districts meet.  “I pushed as hard as I could, and even though I didn’t get the best time and didn’t make the all-state team which I wanted to, I’m using that to keep training for the post-season race,” said Gilmore.

Already planning for the next year, Mogensen said, “[I hope to] beat Tuscarora at districts.”  Tuscarora High School has a competitive cross country team that placed first at the VHSL meet.

“[My goal for next season is] to get the girls faster at the state meet,” said Coach Null.  We can expect great things from the team as the girls are determined to make states again next year.
