Broad Run student Madison Small tragically passed on Tuesday, April 7, 2015 from a deadly case of Bacterial Meningitis. Small played varsity softball and planned to go to Virginia Tech in the fall.

“I think it woke a lot of people up and it reminds me to play every game like it’s our last,” said senior Lauren Pollock.

Small left an utmost impact on her community, family and friends. Small’s impact on sports teams in the county has athletes dedicating games to her.

“I know Madison from playing with and against her over the years. She was talented, and well known by everyone. The impact Madison left on not only the softball community, but everyone around, she was an array of happiness and was taken too soon,” said Pollock.

Small wore number 24 on the Broad Run varsity softball team and in her memory that jersey number has been retired.

“I decided to make T-Shirts in honor of Madison, and to support her family and friends through this tough time,” said Pollock.

Softball captain, Pollock is not the only one supporting the Smalls through their tragic time. Potomac Falls spring sports teams are also showing their support. Boys and girls soccer, girls lacrosse, and both the softball and baseball teams have each showed their support to Small in different ways. Softball, Baseball, and Soccer all purchased T-Shirts in her memory that read, “#WEplayfor24” with the number 24 on the back. And girls lacrosse show their support by writing #Weplayfor24 on their sticks.

“We wrote it on the tape of our lacrosse sticks because it felt good to recognize a fellow athlete that some of my friends knew her personally, we played for her and not to win,” said sophomore Maya Thompson.
