The Potomac Falls girls varsity lacrosse team is coming off of a dominating season last year, having made it all the way to the state championship . The girls only lost one senior last year, so they are hoping that will aid them in meeting their expectations for the upcoming season.

“[It will help] because we already know how to work together as a team and we will get even stronger this year,” said senior and former Conference 14 5A player of the year Sydney Knego.

Coming into this season with high expectations, the girls are looking to improve on their 14-5 record from last season. The girls lost to conference rival Stone Bridge in the state championship.

“we have a better team than last year, so I have even higher expectations for the team. I expect that we will win a lot of games and further develop the character of our players,” said girls varsity head coach Jim Birks.

With key players like attackmen Kelsey Curl, Sydney Knego, and midfielder Tori Birks returning, the offense is looking to fill the net, while on the backend defender Skyla Bailey will help to keep  the defense in check.

“The fact that we only lost one senior really puts us at an advantage…we are almost the same team as last year,” said junior Kelsey Curl.

The team is looking to build on last season’s state championship appearance. The girls worked hard throughout the offseason to improve and get everyone involved by doing an indoor league this winter. Now they have shifted their focus  to improving throughout the regular season.

As a team we plan to work harder and practice more seriously,” said Knego

A few key games for the girls this year are against Tuscarora and Stone Bridge, which will be a rematch of last year’s conference final, regional final, and state final games.

“[Last year] was a constant battle between us [and Stone Bridge], and this year will be the exact same,”  said Curl.
