Spring Sports Preview: JV Girls Lacrosse

The girls junior varsity (JV) lacrosse team is beginning their season with good intentions to make this season better than the last.

“Most of the people [are] new because they needed people to fill up the team. I’m not expecting to win a lot, but I think it is going to be a lot of fun,” said freshman Delia Nutekpor.

The team had trouble finding enough players, however students were selected to participate in the team. There are a lot of students on the team who have never played before, and they are starting to learn the basic skills and rules of the game.

“We practice shooting, skill work, and getting in shape,” said sophomore Emily Jencks.

The team has been working hard and putting in a lot of effort to do well this season despite all the troubles. During practice, a lot of the basic skills and drills are taught to the new girls who have never played before.

“I want the girls to develop their lacrosse skills to be able to compete competitively and have fun,” said head coach Lauren Novak.

Tryouts were also a great learning experience for some of the new girls.

“We ran for 20 minutes around the halls, and then we went into the gym to practice stick skills, like learning how to cradle and pass. Then, we did some drills on how to cradle the ball while running and shooting into the goal,” said Nutekpor.

The girls JV lacrosse team will be playing 11 games this season, but there are a few key games to attend.

“Our home games against Briar Woods on April 6, against Tuscarora on April 12, and against Broad Run on May 9,” said Novak.

Even with a rough start, the girls JV lacrosse team hopes to beat last season’s record of five wins.

“When the girls make great plays during practice or games and realize they are awesome, the coaches already know how awesome they can be,” said Novak.
